Farkhan dropped from Myanmar Sea Games squad

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — Former SEA Games gold medallist Mohd Farkhan Haron was dropped from the national team for the Myanmar SEA Games by the Malaysian Amateur Boxing Federation (MABF).

MABF honorary secretary Mohamad Jani Ismail said Farkhan was not included in the SEA Games squad since he was not ready for competitive action after a long lay off from training.

The MABF has replaced Farkhan, who won gold at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos and silver at the 2011 Games in Indonesia, with Rudy Petrus from the Armed Forces, to compete in the 75kg category.

"However, it does not mean Muhamad Farkhan has been dropped from the national boxing squad. We still need him for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea next year," he said after attending a meeting between MABF and the National Sports Council (NSC), here, today.

Mohamed Jani described Farkhan as a talented and potential boxer in the 75kg category but said he was not ready for the challenge, now.

"Muhamad Farkhan is still in trauma after going through a series of obstacles and problems. He suffered an injury, lost his father and was beaten up by a group of individuals last year," he said.

Meanwhile, contrary to MABF's stand, NSC director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong said he would like to see Farkhan in action at the Myanmar SEA Games that is scheduled from December 11 to 22. — Bernama
