Flood waters has inundated Tanintharyi town and nearby villages in southern Myanmar after the Tanintharyi River exceeded its danger level.

Residents say that the water level of the Tanintharyi River started rising since the end of July and flood started sweeping through the low-lying areas of Tanintharyi town and nearby villages. The water level exceeded its danger level of 24 feet as it rose up to 25 feet on August 2.

"As the Tanintharyi River originates from Dawei area, the Tanintharyi area becomes inundated when floods hit Dawei area following heavy rain. When the water level rises, it lasts for a couple of days. Now, nearby villages including Chaunggyi and Chaunggyi Nge areas have been inundated. If the water level does not fall down in the next three days, the flood could get worsen with high tides," said a resident from Tanintharyi.

"Shwe Late Pyar Road, the industrial zone and Mon Su areas are the worst-hit areas in Tanintharyi town and Kyaukmeekyaung, Myanma Inntaw and Laetaungyar villages are the worst-hit areas among nearby villages. Theses villages had to evacuate due to the flood," said an official who monitors the river level.

Currently, the water level has risen up to 6 feet on Shwe Late Par Road and up to 6.2 feet in Chaung Nge Yat Mon Su area in Tanintharyi town. Around 250 households have been inundated and over 1,200 people have been affected by the flood in Tanintharyi town while thousands of people have been made flood victims in nearby villages.

Tanintharyi Township's administrator Kyaw Thu said the authorities have now started providing assistance to the flood victims.
"Relief aids have been distributed at the relief camps in the town. We will also provide relief works in the villages," said Kyaw Thu.
