Man walks 720 miles in show of sporting spirit ahead of SEA Games

A 45-year old Myanmar has completed a 720-mile walk from the southern part of the Myanmar to the central capital of Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, which he says was aimed at encouraging athletes ahead of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games to be hosted in Myanmar in December.

Aung Thu set out his 29-day trek on July 1 from Myeik Township in Taninthari Region, taking only one day rest on the way in Taunggu Township on July 26.

"I have done the long-distance walk to encourage Myanmar athletes to strive best for success in upcoming SEA Games that Myanmar will host in December," said Aung Thu.

"I firstly thought it would take about 40 days to walk from Myeik to Nay Pyi Taw. Actual walking took just 29 days. I am satisfied with it," he noted.

Actually, Aung Thu started the long-distance walk with a friend of his who later withdrew due to ill health. He continued walking alone and reached Wunna Theikdi Stadium in Nay Pyi Taw at 12:15pm on July 29, where sports ministry's officials greeted him with cheers.
