A senior monk Rakhawantha staged a hunger strike in front of Maha Bandoola Garden in downtown Yangon yesterday morning, demanding all political prisoners to be released on the anniversary of the 88 Student Uprising on August 8.

"I want to request the government to release all the remaining political prisoners on the silver anniversary of the '88 Uprising. I will be on a hunger strike until all the political prisoners have been released," said senior monk Rakhawantha.

The monk said he believes that the release of political prisoners in batches is only a political game and the public will only have view the government differently only after the remaining political prisoners have been released.

He did not apply for permission from the authorities to stage the protest because he did not intend to move around from his place during his protest.

The monk was one of the peace activists who marched from Yangon to Laiza earlier this year.
