More foreign tourists enjoy boat trip to Mingun

The number of foreign tourists taking a boat trip to Myanmar's central town of Mingun has more than double in this rainy season compared to last year, according to the tourist ferryboat association based in Mandalay's Mayanchan Jetty.

About 300 tourists are taking ferry from Mayanchan Jetty to Mingun every day. Usually, it is the off-peak season for tourism in Myanmar between June and October, and it is when ferryboats on the Ayeyarwaddy River rest from their daily business. This rain season is however keeping the tourist ferryboats almost every day, at least until now.

"In the previous years, nearly all the ferryboats stop their business by this time. But in this rainy season, tourists are continuously arriving here. Most of the boats, even if it is not all, are in their daily business, and they are transporting about 300 foreign tourists a day," said Thet Tun, chairperson of the tourist ferryboat association.

Most of the tourists visiting Mingun in rainy season previous years are Spanish and Italian. This year, Chinese and Thai tourists are also paying a visit to this place which is famous for its monuments of historical and cultural importance.

Mingun is located on the west bank of Ayeyarwaddy River in Sagaing Region. It is about 7 miles north of Mandalay, and can be reached by road or by ferryboats. Historical pagodas like Mingun Pahtodawgyi and Myatheindan Pagoda are the famous tourist destinations in Mingun. The world's largest ringing bell called 'Mingun Bell' is also located there.
