Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the state-owned communications
service provider in Myanmar, has invited bids from local firms for
postal services as part of privatization of its services.

In a newspaper commercial, the firm which has monopolized the service
industry said it would grant licenses of registered service providers
to local private companies.

It is looking for opening up opportunities to extend public-private
partnership in postal services.

According to the press release, the Ministry of Communications and
Information Technology would upgrade the postal services so as to meet
international standards.

It also guaranteed transparency and higher standards in selecting the
bid winners.

The foreign bidders are not allowed to participate in the bid where
only national-owned firms are invited.

The deadline for submitting bids is August 16, about 14 days away from
the announcement.

MPT recently awarded two telecom licenses to Norway's Telenor and
Qatar's Ooredoo after hotly contested auction.

According to the ministry, it would itself would be transformed into a
public-private corporation.
