According to an UN report, 70 percent of human trafficking cases in
Myanmar in 2010 were forced marriage to Chinese grooms.
Authorities in 2010 while the country was under the military rule
recorded 122 cases of forced marriage, according to the official
figures.
The country's military regime then maintained so close relations with
China and was accused of turning a blind eye to the trafficking cases.
Chinese husbands-to-be pay up to USD 8000 for this type of arranged
marriage, a recent IRIN feature says, believing the bride is willing.
According to UN Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking (UNIAP)
report, Myanmar parent even allows that marriage with the hope for
better life for their daughters, accepting about USD 1000.
"It is a local custom and some think cross-border marriage is normal,"
Ohnmar Ei Ei Chaw, the UNIAP national programme coordinator, is quoted
as saying by IRIN.
Myanmar and China has signed a memorandum of understanding on
anti-human trafficking since 2009, considering this arranged marriages
to be human trafficking.
Beyond five-year plan to curb human trafficking that ended in 2011,
the number cases of that bribe trafficking is still on the increase.
Due to public awareness and media attention these years in reign of
the first quasi-civilian government that has ruled the country since
2011, the cases are seemed to be declining though.
