Myanmar to participate in Miss Universe beauty contest

Myanmar will participate in the Miss Universe beauty contest for the first time in over 50 years.
Hello Madam magazine will help organise an initial local beauty pageant, titled Miss Myanmar Universe, to select a candidate for the annual international beauty contest. The date for the local pageant has not been announced yet.
"The whole world participates in the Miss Universe pageant. I believe a Myanmar candidate should also participate in this contest. It is a contest that will allow the world to know Myanmar," said film director Maung Myo Min also known as Yintwinphit, who is assisting to organise the Miss Myanmar Universe contest.
Contestants have been preparing for the Miss Myanmar beauty pageant since last year, but the event was postponed due to lack of preparation.
"It's great that we have been given opportunities to participate in international contests. The important thing is the opportunity for the world to know Myanmar. [The contestants] need to prepare for this systematically. As I have participated in the international beauty pageant, I'll share my experiences with others," said Nan Khin Zay Yar, local beauty queen who participated in Miss International beauty pageant last year.
Than Than Aye was the first representative of Myanmar to participate in Miss Universe beauty pageant in 1959, followed by Myint Myint May in 1960 and Myint Myint Khin in 1961.
