Myanmar's authorities have arrested a couple on August 13 suspected of human trafficking in Hsipaw, a township in eastern Shan State, according to sources from Myanmar Anti-Trafficking Task Forces (MATTF).
They are suspected of trafficking four young women from Songkyel village in the township to China where they are to be sold into marriages with Chinese men there, officials said.
The authorities were firstly informed that an unknown couple was gathering young women in the village. An official combined force consisted of military officials from a local base; officers from MATTF, local militiamen and police went to the village and interviewed the young women.
They said a couple named Sai Myint and Nan Myalay from Maikay village in the township had persuaded them that they would get works at a water purification factory in China for a wage of 50 Yuan per day, and if they wish to marry with Chinese men later, they [the couple] will arrange for the marriages, and that there are two or three women who became rich when married with Chinese men.
The couple is now facing a charge of human trafficking in the township.
