Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi said she had no personal
hatred for Than Shwe, the former military ruler who kept her under
various spells of house arrests for more than two decades.
The Nobel laureate parliamentarian told the press 31 July, "I hate no
one. I take them (house arrests) as a consequence of my role in
politics."
Snr-Gen Than Shwe who had ruled the country since 1988 stepped down
after landmark general elections held under his stretching hands in
2011. He is also the founder of ruling Union Solidarity and
Development Party.
"I have no hatred for U Than Shwe," Suu Kyi told reporters, referring
to the former commander-in-chief with the civilian title 'U'
equivalent to 'Mr'.
She is not working to put a blame on some body, but rather to find a
solution, the leader of National League for Democracy, the major
opposition party in the parliament.
The former army chief has officially retired from the military and
politics since 2011 and made no public appearance since then.
Yet he is thought to be mastermind behind closely watched reform
processes taking place in the once-isolated country.
According to USDP vice president Htay Oo who has a close relationship
with the party founder and reportedly visits him regularly, he is
"relaxing and reading" in his mansion in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital
built from scratch by the former dictator.
