Ooredoo is ready to compete with Telenor or MPT

Qatar-based Ooredoo, recently chosen to operate private telecom service in Myanmar, said yesterday the company is ready to compete with another telecom service tender winner Norway-based Telenor and Myanmar Post and Telecommunication (MPT).

Ross Cormack, the senior representative for Ooredoo Myanmar told the Eleven Media at the press conference held in Yangon, "We promise that we will be providing the best services for Myanmar people and that will win the market."

"It is good to have options for consumers. Now we will have something to choose apart MPT for telecom services. Of course the airtime charges and calling rates are important as well as the customer service." Myo Nanda, a MPT customer.

He added the company is happy with the government decision. Because of the government's transparency and straight forward choosing procedure, the Ooredoo has become one of the two private telecom service providers among 92 international applicants for Myanmar telecom license.

The Ooredoo Myanmar is now recruiting the Myanmar staff and will train them to be professional. It is expecting to hire more than 1,000 Myanmar nationals.  It is planning to operate the service within six months of getting official license which will be during next year approximately. 

It is also planning to sell a SIM card at the price of 1,500 kyats per apiece. The company will make availability of SIM cards across the country with that price. It will come with 3G network for data line service.  

"The actual calling rate is not set yet but when we announce the rate it will be attractive," Mr. Cormack said. The calling rate could be 35 to 45 Kyats per minute or lower, he added. On the other hand, its rival Telenor is planning to charge 25 kyats per minute for a call and MPT is charging 50 Kyats per minute for a call.

The five-year objectives of the company are to run the Myanmar Ooredoo with 99 per cent of Myanmar nationals and to cover its service for 97 per cent of Myanmar Population.
