Third anniversary of triple murder in Regina

Exactly three years ago, a townhouse in northeast Regina was the scene of one of the most horrific discoveries in the city's history.

Originally from Burma the Htoo family, 31-year-old Gray Nay, 28-year-old Maw Maw, and their three year old son Seven June, were found dead on August 6, 2010 in their Oakview Drive townhouse.

The Regina Police Service says the ensuing homicide investigation is one of the largest it has ever carried out, with up to 60 investigators at one time having previously worked on this case.

In an attempt to reach out to the city's Burmese community, the Service even put out a message on the Internet in the Karin language spoken by the victims.

A number of those who lived in the townhouse complex in 2010 are still there.

"It was a pretty wild couple of weeks around here. There was police cars parked on the lawn for two weeks and everybody was afraid because nobody knew what had happened," explained one neighbour who didn't want her name used.

She was on vacation when it happened, but was quickly called by another person living in the complex when the bodies were found and interview by police, as all the neighbours were.

"It was terrifying. I actually slept with my lights on in my house for weeks. I put a different lock on the door because we didn't know who had done it."

She has a child who used to play with the three year old boy, describing the family as quiet, speaking little English. It's still a concern for her that police haven't caught the culprit, but realize they may have the details but not the solid evidence to lay charges on someone.

"You kind of become numb to it," she admitted. "You just try and not think of it. You move on."

Another neighbour witnessed the bodies being taken away. She still lives in the area because she doesn't believe this was a random home invasion. She said living in fear is no way to live at all. She claimed the courtyard used to be littered with children in the evening playing—up to 40 kids. However, that hasn't been the case since the murders.

The Regina Police Service said Friday that progress is being made, with a dedicated team of five members constantly working on this case. Police did defer stating whether they had a suspect or person of interest in mind at the current time. They did claim for the first time since the investigation started that arrests have been made, but no charges have ever been laid.

Tips from the public or those who have information are still being asked to come forward to police or Crime Stoppers.
