Action Times Foundation to provide physical, mental assistance to IDPs

The Action Times Foundation, in a joint effort with the Shwe Parami Health Care Foundation, will provide physical and mental health care services to 6,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) staying in refugee camps in Namt kham Township in Shan State, according to ATF officials.

The two foundations, together with a psychiatric team, will visit 19 refugee camps in Namt Kham Township on September 14. The visit will last five days.

Most of the IDPs are now suffering from gastro intestinal disease, said Foundation spokesperson Eindra Nay Nwe.

"IDPs, especially children in Namt Kham Township, SSA and KIA regiments, are staying there, and facing mental illness. They didn't want to meet Burman Myanmar people or hear Burman voices because they had suffered a lot," she said.

"For instance, one day they were enjoying meals together with their father. The next day, their father was dead. Another day, their younger brother stayed with them. The next day, he lost his legs. They were witnessing these kinds of events, so we wanted to reduce their pain somehow. After building their trust, we are going to Northern Shan State with the aim of reducing their stress to some extent."

Among the 6,000 IDPs, Shan, Palaung, Kachin, and Burmans comprise the smallest amount.

The incidence of gastro intestinal diseases among IDPs is due to ration shortages caused by the outbreak of hostilities, which is forcing people to rely on pre-packaged food for nutrition, according to the ATF.
