ATHLETICS: Sea Games on their mind

THREE of five high jumpers who have qualified for the Myanmar Sea Games will go head-to-head at the Selangor Open this weekend while several others will be attempting to secure their tickets to Naypyidaw.

Johor duo S. Navinraj and Nauraj Singh Randhawa will be challenged by Selangor's Azly Ghazali in the high jump tomorrow with only Lee Hup Wei and A. Kavee Alagan missing from the cast.

Of the five, only two will be selected for Myanmar based on their performance at the Malaysian Open next month but tomorrow's event will provide a mini preview of what can be expected at the trial.

Among athletes chasing a spot at the Sea Games, discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin is hoping a return to the scene where he broke the national record in June will provide an impetus to achieve the Games qualification mark of 50.56m.

"My target as always is to qualify for the Sea Games but I don't want to put unnecessary pressure on myself," said Irfan, who set his national record of 49.81m at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil at the National Closed Championships.

"My training has slowed a little since I broke the national record but I hope to be able to throw above 50 metres," added Irfan, who recently enrolled in Universiti Malaya.

Also looking for Sea Games berths are Jironi Riduan in the 800m and sprinter Shamimi Azmi in the 100m.

The main attraction at today's opening evening and night session at the National Sports Complex Mini Stadium will be national pole vault record holder Iskandar Alwi. Iskandar has already qualified for the Sea Games but has been threatening to renew his national record of 5.01m in recent meets. By Devinder Singh
