The Myanmar's Buddhist monks governing body has issued a directive to check the role of Buddhist monks in sectarian violence, according to a Reuters report.

The State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee barred the formation of organizations based on 969 movement that urges Buddhists to shun Muslim establishments.

"They didn't receive any permission, yet they want to form an organization and make nationality-protection laws," the committee's vice-chairman Gunalankara is quoted as saying by Reuters.

The committee did not object the ideology of 969 numerals though, but it saw the movement's drafting of the law that sets rules for interfaith marriages was unacceptable.

Myanmar has seen a series of sectarian violence in various parts of the country in the aftermath of the devastating one in the western Rakhine State in 2012.

The apparent leader of 969 movement Mandalay-based monk Wirathu rejected the ban of the body saying it "undemocratic", according to the report.
