Local farmers in Myanmar's capital Nay Pyi Taw have refused to accept land compensation by a military official as the amount is less than that the government has promised, according to a local source.

"On August 30 after the government's announcement of land compensation in the newspaper, ex-chairman Maung Aye of Khitaye Village Administrative Office and a military official sent by Major General Khin Maung Tun came to us. They offered to give Ks 600,000 (over US$600) per acre of land that is much less than offered by the president. We cannot accept that. Our farmers have suffered for years since our land were seized. They should have sympathy for us," Zaw Latt, a local farmer from Wegyi village, told The Daily Eleven.

About 100 acres of land in Wunbyan village, Zeyathiri township, were reportedly seized by military officials Maj-Gen Khin Maung Tun, Maj-Gen Ohn Myint, Maj-Gen Wai Lwin, Maj-Gen Hla Shwe, Maung Maung Latt and Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Out of them, only Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than has come to negotiated with the local farmers for 28 acres of land in Chaungphya village. But the three land owners turned down his offer, said Zaw Latt.

As ordered by President Thein Sein, Thiha Min Company on August 28 paid compensation to eight farmers for more than 35 acres of land. The company offered Ks 2 million per care for the land by roadside and Ks 1 million for the land away from roadside.
