According to figures compiled by the Fire Department, 1270 cases of fire across Myanmar has caused an estimated damage of more than MMK 3200 million from January to August 2013.
A senior official from the Fire Department said, "The main cause of fire is negligence. Nevertheless, the total value of damage this year is less than last year."
In 2012, during the corresponding months, there were 857 cases of fire, causing damage worth more than MMK 6900 million.
The report of causes of fire in 2013 states that, 319 cases were related to cooking; 424 due to negligence; 32 were caused by non-human factors; 212 were related to electrical appliances and 170 were arson cases; 111 were related to wildfire, and two were caused by lightning.
4248 houses, ten factories, and 43 warehouses were gutted in the fire. The fire also killed 52 people, left 110 people with injuries and killed 2532 animals.
In August, Mandalay Region reported the highest number of fire cases, followed by Yangon Region and Saigang Region, at the second and third place, respectively, according to the official from the Fire Department.
