Myanmar Railways (MR)'s planned upgrade of railroads in Yangon is aimed at increasing speed in circular trains, according to Maung Maung Than, Deputy General Manager of MR.
Yangon circular trains have been full of commuters lately, so the MR has arranged to increase the speed and services in them.
"We are starting the upgrading now. We mainly intended to target the circular railroad for improvements," said Maung Maung Than.
According to a pre-2013 agreement with Japan, MR was intending to widen the breadth of railway for its future plans. Moreover, MR will redesign the Yangon circular railroad based on its current railroad plan, Ministry of Rail Transportation sources said.
In addition to the Yangon circular railroad project, Japan will construct a railroad to Thilawa port, the ministry's head office spokesman, Win Naung, said.
Japan will provide a small-interest loan to assist in the upgrade of Yangon circular railroad and upcoming railroad projects, according to sources.
In Yangon, 21 circular train routes are currently running daily at five-minute intervals. More than 100,000 commuters use the train daily.
