Myanmar Rivers Network calls suspension of dam projects

Due to Myanmar's environmental impact, Myanmar Rivers Network has called on China and Thailand to suspend the implementation of dam projects in Thanlwin River for power generating, according to the Network.
Despite the potential environmental impact, the deputy minister for Electric Power in March announced that the ministry was going to build six dams along Thanlwin River.
The project can generate over 15,000 MW electricity that will be exported mainly to China and Thailand.
In 2004, the former military government agreed with the Indian government to construct Thamanthi dam project. Local residents urged the Indian government to suspend the dam project by sending an environmental impact assessment report, highlighting social and agricultural impacts on the local people.
The Indian government decided to suspended the project in June this year.
For the same reason, Myanmar Rivers Network urged China and Thailand to stop thier dam projects on Thanlwin River as they can affect the lives and property of the local people.
The network also advised them to seek ways of generating power in their own countries.
U Ohn, an environmentalist, also suggested that possible consequences from building dams in Thanlwin River for power generation should be discussed in the ASEAN Forum.
