Myanmar stands fifth among Southeast Asian countries for leprosy

Myanmar ranks fifth among Southeast Asian countries for high rates of leprosy, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The WHO's report says Indonesia has the greatest number of leprosy outbreak with India second, Bangladesh third and Nepal fourth, respectively.
In leprosy case, the physical deformed is being regarded as a second level and there are over 400 patients for second level suffering Leprosy disease yearly.
Most of the patients are very poor in medical knowledge such as they [patients] didn't want people to know their disease outbreak and they didn't know absolutely by themselves as they are suffering from leprosy disease.
Another reason is that delaying of seeking out the new leprosy patients by medical staff. So, the WHO is going to make the research works on leprosy cases.
The Medical Research Department (lower Myanmar) under the Health Department will cooperate with local leprosy patients to carry out the research works starting at the end of this year.
In Myanmar, Yangon, Mandalay, Sagaing, Bago, Ayeyawady and Magway regions suffered high rates of Leprosy outbreak. Among the regions, Mandalay and Ayeyawady regions will carry out the research works starting from December.
The Health Department is rendering medical treatments to Leprosy patients by using MTD drugs and the medical treatment can take about six months or one year depending on the disease.
According to recent figures from the WHO, there are over 200,000 people suffering from leprosy disease yearly. Among them, nearly 15,000 are physically deformed and disable.
