The Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) has said that it will carry out investigations over the recent violence in Thandwe Township and submit their findings in a report to parliament, according to party leaders.
Five people were killed and over 480 people made homeless when violent mobs attacked homes in villages around Thandwe Township, Rakhine State. Police have arrested 48 people in connection to the violence, including high profile RNDP members.
"We will assign duties to representatives chosen from the party's headquarters for the report. We will investigate conditions of the area and meet families of the detained. We will ask them questions such as: Why were they arrested? Were they arrested with official warrants? What they have done? Does the rule of law really exist in the area?" said RNDP Chairman Aye Maung.
The violence coincided with President Thein Sein's first visit to the conflict-torn region raising security concerns in the violence-prone region. Aye Maung added that representatives from the party will carry out field trips to riot-hit areas in the town for the report.
"We will record everything they say to report to the government. If necessary, it will proceed to the parliament," he said.
He also said that President Thein Sein may not know the true situation surrounding the violence as he did not reach "the bottom level" during his visit to the state.
