Juri Chai – An emergency meeting to draft the 2014-5 Mon State budget was held on November 4 at the State Hluttaw Hall in Mon State capital Moulmein.

While the state budget was the primary agenda, other issues were debated including ancient Mon heritage protection/preservation and private sea boat operation systems. 30 of the 31 Mon State Hluttaw representatives were in attendance.

The State faces a shortfall of about 14,139 million Kyats from the 2013-4 financial year, so it was decided that an allocation of 30,000 Million kyats will be submitted to the Pyidaungsu parliament to account for the 2013-4 deficit and the 2014-5 spending budget, according to Dr. Aung Naing Oo, a Mon State Hluttaw Representative.

"At the meeting, we primarily discussed how to use our budget, how much shortfall of money to propose, and how much to spend again," said Dr. Aung Naing Oo, adding that all representatives believe that the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw will accept their proposal for the upcoming financial year.

The Mon State will need additional shortfall financing this year because the State has to reconstruct roads, bridges, new buildings and offices.

Several of Burma's states and divisions [regions] have similarly held emergency meetings for the 2014-2015 financial year.
