YANGON—Myanmar became the 141st member of PEN International with the establishment of PEN Myanmar on Wednesday, joining a global community of writers working to protect freedom of expression and encourage the development of literature.
Local writers from print and electronic media voted for Ma Thida (Sanchaung) as chairperson of PEN Myanmar while Nay Phone Latt and Myay Hmone Lwin have been selected as secretary and finance officer, respectively, of the group.
PEN Myanmar is comprised of committees for translation and ethnic literature rights, female writers, writers for peace, imprisoned writers, and a PEN Myanmar working committee.
"I'm going to participate in the imprisoned writers committee. I have been sent to prison for writing a poem. At that time, PEN International gave me a PEN award," said poet Saw Wai.
"I was able to work for the right to establish a library and write in prison because of this award. As I have had these experiences and know the difficulties inside prison, I think I will be able to help this committee."
PEN International is a non-governmental organisation established in London in 1921. It has opened more than 400 PEN centres all over the world and its members include writers, playwrights, and editors.
