PARLIAMENT URGES GOVERNMENT TO RECONSIDER ELECTRICITY CHARGES

Written by Admin on November 11, 2013. Posted in News

Myanmar's parliament approved the urgent motion challenging the
government's decision to increase electricity bill, according to the
government-run Myanma Alinn daily.

The motion was submitted after the people took to the street in Yangon.

Six lawmakers seconded the motion submitted by MP Aye Mauk, who is
also the secretary of the parliamentary committee on planning and
finance.

The electricity charges were increased nearly twice without informing
the subscribers in advance.

The parliament urged the government led by president Thein Sein to
suspend the plan to increase the electricity bill in reconsideration
period.

Deputy minister for electric power Aung Than Oo said the government
would reconsider the agreeable electricity charges.

Aye Mauk said in submitting the motion that the Electric Power
Ministry should consider alternatives rather than increasing the
electricity charges to cover its loss.
