MYITKYINA - Displaced villagers from Sankin village in Kachin State, sheltered at the Wuntho monastery in Myitkyina for about two years have now returned to their homes.
They returned home on December 2 on their own accord despite ongoing negotiations between the government and the Kachin Independence Organisation. They submitted their desire through the state government and moved back their native homes with the help from the social organisations.
"We had to worry about our lives when clashes occurred and so we came here. Now that stability prevails, we submitted to be able to go back homes since it is already two years and it is difficult to earn money," said Kyin Myaing who fled for his life two years ago.
"It is the very first time the IDPs return homes. World Food Programme (WFP) provided a month provision of food. Currently, there are over 39,000 refugees under the control of the state government. There are no IDPs asking for help to go back their native places," said Bauk Jar, Minister for Social Affairs of Kachin State.
Head of the Myanmar army northern command gave a bag of rice and Ks 30,000 (US$ 30) to each family and said: "We stand for the people. What happened in Mansi was that there was a suspicion when we went to give help to the public. We are not driving them. The armed forces of the government will help all of you. Don't doubt us."
