The EU has given a firm indication that an arms embargo imposed on Myanmar is likely to be extended beyond its approaching expiry date.
It lifted trade and economic sanctions against Myanmar in April 2013 in response to the Southeast Asian country's continuing political reform programme. The arms embargo stayed in place, however, and was extended until 30 April 2014.
A spokesperson for Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission, told
IHS Jane's
on 30 January that although the EU reserves the right to amend the Myanmar embargo at any time, concerns remain about human rights abuses within the country.
