Trade Unions Federation calls for K8,500 minimum daily wage

Speaking after call was made on April 28, federation chairman U Aung Lin said the figure of K8,500 was set on the basis of data gathered by the 180 groups in surveys involving 50 townships throughout the country and more than 186,000 families in 30 townships in Yangon Region.

U Aung Lin said the federation would discuss the minimum daily wage with employers after submitting the proposal to the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security.

The proposal called for a minimum daily wage to vary according to the cost of living, he said.

The general secretary of the Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association, Daw Khine Khine Nwe, said it would discuss the proposal with both the ministry and the federation.

"The employers and employees will have to build understanding," she said.

Another employer, who requested anonymity, said the proposed minimum daily wage of K8,500 was too high and would be an obstacle to foreign investment as well as possibility forcing some factories and businesses to close.

He said factories and businesses already faced problems caused by insufficient electricity, high transportation costs and expensive land.

A minimum daily wages law was promulgated on March 31, 2013, but the implementing bylaws are yet to be promulgated because of differences between employers and workers.
