Illegal logging is threatening the monkeys' survival (Jeremy Holden)
THE first video footage of a rare breed of sneezing monkey found only in the
remote highlands of Burma has sparked hope for the survival of a species
facing extinction at the hands of illegal loggers.
Burma's snub-nosed monkeys, which have large, upturned nostrils into which
rainwater runs, making them sneeze, have been caught on video for the first
time by a ranger. The species, discovered four years ago by scientists
working for Fauna Flora International (FFI), a Cambridge-based
wildlife charity, are thought to have declined to a population of fewer than
300 and to be facing extinction.
"This video is extremely exciting for the survival of the species," said Frank
Momberg, a director of the charity, who led the expedition that discovered
the monkeys in 2010.
The only previous evidence of their existence was a handful of carcasses and
pelts bought from local hunters and a few blurred
