Arakan National Conference has designated Wednesday (1st waning of Kasone in Myanmar's lunar calendar) as Arakan National Day.

"We made the grouping of 17 townships to designate the national day. Out of three days we agreed on, the day on which the Buddha visited Arakan state and King Sanda Suriya had cast Mahamyatmuni Buddha image, was designated as the national day. This day received a majority vote. Twelve of 17 townships reached an agreement. It has been approved at the Arakan National Conference. The leading committee will announce and submitted it to the parliament," said Dr Tin Aung, a member from the committee.

The Union government should designate this day as the national day as it is a red-letter day for all Arakan people. As part of efforts to designate Arakan National Day, a temporary committee was formed in Sittway on 28 February last year.

Plans are under way to ask the parliament's lower house to declare the Arakan National Day as an official holiday.
