The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) has denounced the crackdown on people protesting the Lapadaungtaung copper mine project.
In a statement issued yesterday, the KIO central committee expressed sympathy for the victims of the crackdown.
The statement said the authorities used force on November 29 to disperse the protesters, injuring the locals and Buddhist monks.
Locals started demonstration against Lapadaungtaung copper mine project, a co-operation between Military-backed Myanmar Economic Holding Limited and the Chinese mining company Wanbao, in March to protest farmlands grabbing, demolition of religious buildings, and environmental and health hazards.
On November 18, monks opened six protest camps near the Lapadaungtaung project. As the protesters did not vacate the camps complying with their instructions, police raided the camps on November 29.
The biggest crackdown during the Thein Sein regime, the raid has earned the government criticism from different spheres of life.
