Probe begins for copper mine crackdown

The investigation commission for Lapadaungtaung crackdown has started the probe by meeting with the locals on December 5, parliament member Khin San Hlaing for Pale Township, Sagaing Region said.

"On the first day of the investigation, we met the locals from Watmhay village and discussed with them about the Lapadaungtaung copper mine project, as well as related issues like environment and health," Khin San Hlaing said.

"We are surveying the villagers on whether or not project should keep going," Khin San Hlaing added. "We listened to their views. We will move on to other villages for further investigation next days."

The commission will gather all information from locals in the area.

The President's Office announced the formation of an investigation commission on December 3 to scrutinise whether or not the copper mine project at Lepadaungtaung Mountain should be continued. The office also assigned Aung San Suu Kyi as the commission chairman.
