Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy, has blamed authorities over the depletion of Myanmar's natural resources, including teak.
She was speaking to local people in Magway at a mass meeting held at the field of the Magway Mya Thalun Pagoda on November 9.
She also pointed out that the country is not poor but it is the people only who are suffering from poverty.
"The nation is not that poor. Our country has rich natural resources, compared with other nations. Yet, our citizens are actually a valuable asset to the country," Suu Kyi said.
"However much we have natural resources on the surface or underground, they would be useless if the citizens were naive. For example, the forests have been severely depleted. Teak, which is recognised as valuable in the world, has already been depleted in Myanmar.
"This is because we [the citizens] have failed to protect and preserve those natural resources. Some would say that this is not the concern of ordinary people and it is the duty of government only. It's partially right. But people also have their responsibility. The government is formed with those among the public. Sometimes, I wonder how those in power were born and bred. I also wonder how their parents taught and admonished them. So I would like to urge the people to train and nurture their young children bearing in mind what kind of person they should become if they come to power in the country," she said.
She also revealed that efforts are being made to improve Myanmar's education, which suffers from low standard due to lack of a good system, by amending existing laws in parliament.
Regarding constitutional amendments, she changes as well as flexibility are necessary for the country. She added that she would seek these changes if they are in the interest of the country and for national reconciliation.
Suu Kyi toured some areas of Magway Region in central Myanmar and met with the local people on December 8 and 9.
