Canada appoints its first resident ambassador to Myanmar

Canada already appointed Mark McDowell as its first Canadian Ambassador to Myanmar, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada, released on March 29.

Canada has promoted the relationship with Myanmar due to support for Myanmar's positive reforming process. Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird had visited Myanmar for the first time on March 8 last year and then the Canadian delegations led by the Minister of Trade and the Secretary of Parliament also visited Myanmar.

At present, 50-year-old Mark McDowell is serving the duties as the Head of Public Relations Department of Canada Embassy in Beijing of the People's Republic of China and he will become the first Canadian Ambassador to Myanmar.

In the past, the embassy's affairs had to be carried out through Canadian Embassy in Thailand because Myanmar didn't allow opening the embassy of Canada. The Canadian Embassy will be opened in the near future.
