Meikhtila Market was reopened on March 30, nine days after violence erupted and fear beseiged the township.

Another close by market, Pidaukmyaing, also reopened the same day.

The markets were shut down due to the violence started on March 20 in the township that killed more than 40 people during three days of violence.

"Although the market was reopened, most of the shops in the market did not open yet. The market is only one left untouched by the violence in the whole town. But the market has a reputation for low standards of discipline. [We] want firefighting facilities on standby. And the authorities should take rapid action as necessary in case of any trouble," said Min Aung Naing, a shop owner from the market.

"The market is reopened at nine o'clock today and will close at five as usual. It will open tomorrow. Police forces have joined forces with the concerned officials from the market for its security," said an official from the market committee.

The market is one of the biggest markets in the area with more than 4000 registered shops and 3000 temporary stalls. People from nearby townships such as Yamethin, Pyawbwe and Tharzi used to visit the market for shopping.
