A leading international accountancy and finance association has joined forces with the Myanmar Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) to work more closely together.

The agreement was signed between the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England Wales' (ICAEW) Southeast Asia regional director Mark Billington and MICPA chairman U Kyaw Tin, in a ceremony watched over by witnessed Britain's trade minister, Lord Stephen Green. The signing took place in Yangon on June 13.

The agreement establishes a framework for the two bodies to work together to develop talent and advance the accountancy profession in Myanmar and Southeast Asia.

ICAEW and MICPA also agree to share views on the accountancy profession nationally and internationally, with an emphasis on cooperation in corporate governance, professional ethics, technical research, professional development, training, quality control and examination.

U Kyaw Tin said increased foreign investors in Myanmar would need more well-trained accountants.

"We are delighted to be working with ICAEW, a world leader in the field of accountancy and finance," he said. "With Myanmar's economy becoming more international, companies will be looking for accounting professionals with internationally recognised accreditation. This agreement cements our commitment to enhancing our members' capacities and the professionalism."

Mr Billington added: "We look forward to strengthening the relationship between ICAEW and MICPA. Myanmar is an emerging and fast-growing economy with many opportunities and great potential for development."

"ICAEW hopes to use its global experience to support the profession in Myanmar by developing joint programs and supporting further learning in areas of mutual interest to MICPA members and ICAEW Chartered Accountants," he said.

MICPA is the professional body of accountants with more than 600 members. It is accredited under Myanmar Accountancy Law and registered as non-profit and non-government organisation.
