Norwegian multinational telecommunications firm Telenor and
Qatar-based Ooredoo were announced winners in Myanmar's hotly
contested telecom auction Thursday.
Despite the lower house's blockage of the announcement a day before,
the government tender assessment committee unveiled successful winners
in Thursday evening.
Though, president's spokesman Ye Htut said that the tenders are
invited and assessed as per international standards.
The lower house's move to delay the selection draws criticisms,
especially on social networking web site Facebook. The lower house
unanimously demanded the delay before the new telecom law is passed.
Defeating favourites Digicel, KDDI and SingTel, Telenor and Ooredoo
won the bids, prompting Myanmar netizens to welcome and congratulate
their victory.
Telenor is a firm based in Baerum near Oslo in Norway and has many
operations in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Asia. It has the
experience of building new telecom infrastructures in hugely untapped
markets with its entry into Pakistan in 2005.
Ooredoo, previously known as Qatar Telecom, is the large public
company of Qatar and exclusive telecommunications services provider of
the country and Middle East.
The tender board evaluated the tenders on financial background,
technical background and other proposed features with the help of an
international evaluation firm.
The firms will become the first-ever international telecom services
provider in the country where the government-owned Myanma Posts and
Telecommunications monopolized the sector previously.
