Hundreds of thousands of displaced people still in Myanmar - UN

There are over 632,000 internally displaced people in the whole of Myanmar; the majority comes from Kayin State, according to United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA).

Many areas of Kayin State suffered for a long time because of the ongoing conflict and there are about 400,000 still without home. Among them, over 10,000 people were displaced between August 2011 and July 2012 according to the report.

The Myanmar government and the ethnic armed groups have made a cease fire agreement and discussions are underway on how to allow displaced people to return home. Many things such as security, safe livelihoods and basic infrastructure are still missing from conflict affected areas.

Among the displaced people in the whole of Myanmar, there are 400,000 in Kayin State, 85,000 in Kachin State, 7,000 in Meikhtila, 140,000 in northern Rakhine State according to UNOCHA estimates.
