Myanmar's reformist president Thein Sein promised Monday that his government would released all the political prisoners by the end of this year.
He made the comment in his speech at Chatham House in London, a leading political institution, on his visit to UK.
"I guarantee to you that by the end of this year there will be no prisoners of conscience in Myanmar," said the president.
Myanmar government has already released hundreds of political prisoners detained by the previous military regime.
He also said his government would should "zero tolerance" to any renewed sectarian violence in the country.
"I promise you that we will take a zero-tolerance approach to any renewed violence and against those who fuel ethnic hatreds," he said.
The president is on his second visit to Europe within months.
