Myanmar's hyper-tall man to receive treatment

An unusually tall man from central Myanmar who is supposed to be suffering from growth hormonal disorder, is to receive medical treatment in Yangon, according to medical specialists.

The 35-year old Win Zaw Oo is 7 feet and 10 inches tall and lives in Htonepaukchine Village in Natmauk Township, Magway Region.

Doctors think his extraordinary height is due to a chronic disease called Acromegaly, that occurs when the body produces too many growth hormones.

"Medicine is not something one can guarantee hundred percent. Agreements from the patient, the patient's family and the medical authorities are required. If he totally trusts in our good will, he will accept it. It depends on him," Dr Khin Maung Win told a press conference on Monday.

Facing walking difficulties and over-sweating, Win Zaw Oo has been receiving treatment at Novel Hepatic and Gastrointestinal Specialist Clinic in Yangon since June 29.

"Except from sweating and difficult movements, I am fine like an ordinary man. But, I am very glad that the doctors contacted me to offer medical treatment. Man is mortal. As I'm not rich, I've never thought of getting such treatment. I will accept what the doctors have to offer," said Win Zaw Oo.

"The disease condition is because of the pituitary gland in the brain producing too much hormones. Then, the lips and jaws grow large. The person will become abnormally tall and the limb bones will become large. Later, the patient may suffer from impaired vision and diabetes," said Neurologist Professor Dr Myat Thu.

Up to now, doctors report that Win Zaw Oo's vision is fine and he doesn't suffer diabetes. However results from his medical checkup will determine the treatment which could mean operating.
