Colonel Tin Win, Yangon Region Minister for Security and Border Affairs revealed findings that young people were abusing readily available medicines such as cough syrops at the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
"Some youths are using typical cough medicine as drugs. Cough medicine such as Rodiler, manufactured in South Korea, Romilar from India, Rotuss from Thailand are being used as drugs," he said.
"Cough tablets are also misused as drugs so is glue for repairing bicycle tires and Khaini used for chewing betel produced from India," the Colonel added.
Arresting of narcotic users and marijuana are also on the rise in Yangon region. Social organisations argue that glue, petrol and kerosene oil are being used as substitute. Education on drug abuse is being provided at basic education high schools.
