An MP from ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party expressed doubts that Parliament can amend the military-drafted 2008 Constitution.
"There are 457 Sections in the Constitution and 90 of them have been written to make it difficult to amend. It took 14 years to draft this. However, the 'Four Heavenly Kings' will watch over us. I think things will be all right," said MP Thura Aung Ko.
During the last Parliament session, Thura Aung Ko submitted an emergency proposal to set up a commission to review amending the 2008 constitution. It was approved without any objections.
Myanmar's 2008 Constitution is considered one of the most difficult to amend. It requires a seventy-five percent of all representatives of the Union Assembly to approve changes in most provisions after which must be ratified by a nation-wide referendum. The military control 25 percent of Parliament giving them a de facto veto role on passing any amendments.
The current constitution prohibits opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming a president.
