Yangon City Development Committee, the municiple body of the largest city of Myanmar, will no more allow construction of buildings that block the sight of ancient buildings, the local daily Messenger reported.
"Colonial buildings are priceless. We will not allow construction of buildings that block the sight of these buildings and Shwedagon Pagoda," an unnamed YCDC official said.
Most of colonial buildings are being refurbished extensively by Yangon Heritage Trust and YCDC.
Yangon Heritage Trust is formed with scholars led by acclaimed historian Thant Myint-U, the grand son of late ex-Secretary-General of United Nations Thant.
The committee has requested the region government not to allow proposed construction of towering buildings near the ancient ones.
A legislation on conservation of ancient colonial buildings beign drafted by YCDC, architects and Japan International Cooperation Agency has been completed 50 percent, according to the report.
Myanmar has 189 public buildings and some 200 private ones which fall into the category of "ancient buildings".
