Crisis in Thailand may affect Myanmar migrant workers

Factories in Thailand and Myanmar migrant workers might be affected by the unstable political situation, according to the Thai-based Myanmar migrant workers' rights network.

The Royal Thai Military announced marshal law on May 20 to attempt to stabilise the political crisis in Thailand after demonstrations against government.

"If these unstable political situations continue to happen, Thailand's production section would be affected. And job opportunity shortage, inability to work regularly, and ideality of work might cause to Myanmar migrant workers," said Sein Htay, Director of Thailand-based Myanmar migrant workers' rights network.

A Thai Ministers Council Meeting on March 25 led by Prime Minister, Yinluck Shinawatra, allowed visa-expired Myanmar workers to stay in Thailand for another 180 days.

Thailand, the country with most Myanmar migrant workers, has over three million Myanmar migrant workers.
