YANGON - The State-owned Myanmar Airways has signed an agreement to buy six new aircrafts from French Aerospace Company (ATR) and to open a major maintenance centre at Yangon International Airport.

"We have signed a MoU on May 6 to buy six new aircrafts from French Aerospace Company ATR and to build major maintenance centre for ATR's aircrafts. As a second phase, we are going to sign an agreement with the ATR Company," said Than Tun, Managing Director of Myanmar Airways.

Most local airline companies are flying domestically using the French-made ATR planes. To maintain the aircrafts, the company has to go Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore where they have assembly plants.

Building a maintenance centre in Myanmar will mean that they don't need to fly abroad for maintenance work.

Myanmar Airways was founded in September of 1948 and it is now flying the domestic flights with nine aircrafts.

The flagship airway is also using two French cargo planes.
