Myanmar News Links: Arrogance of Burma and the Failed Diplomacy of Bangladesh (Part 1)

After North Korea, Burma, in the south and south east Asia, is a 'closed country', more for the quasi-military govt's vice like grip on its media and other internal pro people institutions than for the international embargo imposed upon the country. Even though Burma's name has been propped up occasionally mainly for its democratic icon Aung San Suu Kyi and for the ethnic Rohingyas, who are the world's most persecuted minority group. People of Burma have been repressed under the boots of the junta for a long time but the world preaches of democracy, human right and justice are using their mouths over brains on these two issues. Especially the US , that meddles in various countries' internal issues and goes as far as punishing those 'crappy little countries' by 'creative war' and 'total war' in the name of 'weapons of mass destruction' for the 'profits of war'.

Hence, in the varied scenario of the current geo political reality, Burma is gradually drifting away from the shadows of China mainly for huge untapped mineral resources and slithering into that of west as a result of ideological concession from the world powers, especially from US – concentrated its gesture towards the democratic transition of Burma, aimed at seeing Suu Kyi at the helm to get a US leverage in Burma, where anti-Muslim religious extremism is the other side of the coin; to which both US as well as Suu Kyi prefer to remain silent to achieve their common interest ignoring the human right issue of the ethnic Rohingya minority.

The quasi-military Burmese authority has opened up its economy and the investors from the west is now rushing to Burma keeping a blind eye to the Rohingya issue because that is a moral issue, which world powers think cannot go in tandem with the economic prospect that is needed to grab; thus elbowing each other for bagging lucrative sectors never feeling a pang of embarrassment. Such silence might be interpreted by Burma as a go ahead, which was substantiated by the recent leaked documents from the Burmese govt. – published by the Bangkok based 'Fortify Right' where it was evident that the inhuman repressive measures targeting the Rohingyas were deviously crafted govt. level policy aimed at the extinction of the Muslim Rohingyas from Arakan state of Burma. Fortify Right publication provided twelve govt. documents, many of which were also referred by the UN bodies and various international human right agencies, pointed out specific evidences of the Burmese govt's policies targeting the Rohingyas and inferred that such acts "could amount to crime against humanity." It is predictable that the orchestrated attacks on the Rohingyas in 2012-13 and their attempted mass exodus from Arakan to Bangladesh were a deliberate act of Burma. Unfortunately, Bangladesh has been directly affected by such extinction plan but could not yet display any decisive response to address such burning issue. Initially, when such plans were implemented in a form of pushing the Rohingyas into Bangladesh in late seventies, they were provided refuge in Bangladesh not only on humanitarian ground, but also on the ground of painful memories, in which millions of Bengalis got refuge in India in 1971. But later Bangladesh dithered, ranging from denying entry to denying the existence of Rohingyas in Bangladesh, when Burma claimed that Rohingyas are Bangali intruders and demanded Bangladesh should take them back. To do this Burma has chosen a unique tactic by making the border restive and then pushing Rohingyas in bulk towards Bangladesh. Burma makes the border restive because otherwise Rohingyas might be pushed back by Bangladesh. And the intention of eliminating an ethnic group by pushing them at the middle of two confronting forces is nothing but a neo-Nazi face of Burma.

Throughout the AL tenure starting from 2009, govt. acted very cowardly in responding to any Burmese aggressive attitude by denying facts about any Burmese military activities near Bangladesh border though detail reports were there in all the national newspapers about amassing huge Burmese military, air and naval forces on Bangladesh border aimed at large scale war with Bangladesh. But why, suddenly Burma, which considered Bangladesh an aggressive neighbor, has turned aggressive against Bangladesh, contrary to the fact that Burmese military expenditure is still smaller than that of Bangladesh? It was so till AL came to power in 2009, immediately after which Bangladesh Army went through a massive purgation in line with the Harvard publication by Mr. Shajeeb Wazed Joy, son of the Prime Minister, where Mr. Joy claimed that 30% of Bangladesh Army strength is linked to Islamists and once AL would come to power, a cleansing will be done to army.
