BW Video: World Refugee Day Comes to Boise

Saturday's spectacular weather was one reason for thousands of Boiseans to fill the Grove Plaza—all the better that the sun shone down on the World Refugee Day celebration and Capital City Public Market.

World Refugee Day, a United Nations initiative since 2011, uses art, crafts, performances and plenty of native food to counter fear and ignorance to the plight of millions of refugees around the world.

In 2013, Idaho welcomed more than 800 refugees from 19 countries, including Congo, Burma, Afghanistan and Iraq. The refugees, resettled in Idaho after being forced to flee their homelands; quite often have risked their lives to assist the United States government and military.

This year's Boise celebration also included a naturalization ceremony, welcoming 11 refugees from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Burma, Burundi, Colombia, Iraq, Somalia and Ukraine as new U.S. citizens. Somali, Uzbeki and Egyptian food was dished out, and live bands and dancing was presented by refugees from Congo, Burma, Iraq and Bhutan.
