Kanpetlet Chins Affected by 'Collapsed' Bridge

14 November 2012: People in Kanpetlet Township of Chin State have faced difficulties in trading and public transportation following a Saw Creek bridge broken last Thursday.

The bridge connecting Kanpetlet of Chin State and Magway of Magway region collapsed at 9pm on 8 November while a car carrying 7,000 pieces of brick was passing.

No casualty was reported in the incident.

The local people on both sides have been impeded from travelling along the Seikpyu-Chauk-Magway-Kanpetlet road, according to the New Light of Myanmar yesterday.

"The situation really affects daily activities of the people as it is the main road that links Kanpetlet Township to other parts of Burma. Kanpetlet can be reached by cars via two ways but this is the main one," a Kanpetlet local from Rangoon told Chinland Guardian.

Kanpetlet in southern parts of Chin State can be accessed by cars from Magway via Saw and from Kyaukhtu, mostly during the summer and winter reasons.

"The bridge is very old and is rarely maintained. It was unfortunate but no surprise that this happened. Luckily, we didn't have any major accidents," added the Chin reporter.

"It is essential that the bridge is rebuilt as quickly as possible because many locals depend so much on trading such as selling snacks and basic goods across the river on a day-to-day basis."

In August, broken bridges on the Indo-Burma Friendship road were reported hindering border trading and transportation.

The Eleven Media said that most of the bridges were defective and some drivers had to take detours but the roads were not good for travelling during the rainy season.

The Kanmagyi bridge collapsed early August while a six-wheel truck carrying cargo was crossing, according the Eleven Media.

Chin State, named the poorest in Burma, remains one of the most isolated regions across the country due to difficult accessibility.
