Ministries blamed for $60 million loss

The Union Auditor-General's Office has found that the country lost revenue of more than 50 billion kyats (about US$60 million) and US$200,000 for 2011-2012 fiscal year.
Union Auditor-General Thein Htaik submitted the report during a parliamentary session of the Union Assembly on November 14.
The investigation was conducted between April 1, 2011, and September 30, 2012. It was found that 15 government ministries committed 47 cases of frauds and misappropriation of government revenues.
The 25 departments and enterprises from the 15 ministries have been asked to pay their collected funds to the government.
The initial findings revealed that 47 departments and enterprises failed to pay 58.398 billion kyats and US$232,977 to the government in 2012 fiscal year. Legal action was also taken against some officials involved in the cases.
The report of the Auditor-General's Office said that the government received 17.426 billion kyats and US$162,322.
However, 40.828 billion kyats and US$70,655 are still to be received from private businesses.
The staff of these 15 ministries misappropriated 143 million kyats, according to the report.
The revenues still owed by the ministries through privates businesses are 35.653 billion kyats and US$70,655 from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, 4.815 billion kyats from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, 88 million kyats from the Ministry of Information and 270 million kyats from the Ministry of Commerce.
The mismanagement and misappropriation of ministerial staff amounted to 117 million kyats from the Information Ministry, 7 million kyats from the Rail Transportation Ministry and 19 million kyats from the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs.
