Authorities said more than 500 unlicensed vehicles and bikes have been seized in 2012 and some of the vehicles belonged to government officials.

Police Colonel Myint Htwe from Yangon Region Police Department confirmed that 50 unlicensed vehicles and 450 unlicensed bikes were seized between January and October.

A unit was formed, reportedly, to seize unlicensed vehicles. The unit comprised police, traffic officials, Yangon Region central supervisory committee for motor vehicles, directorate of road transport and vessels and the Yangon City development committee.

An official from Yangon Region Police Department said: "We are making surprise checks at different townships. We found that some people had bought top model cars with licence plates but they are not officially registered. Some of the vehicles belong to directors of government departments. Government officials should not do things like this."

A white Toyota Corolla super roof with the licence plate 1D/… whose owner could not show any licence documents, was arrested on September 23. When checked the licence was registered as a diesel Nissan truck.
