UNFPA gives Myanmar $5m-worth equipment for census

The United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA) will provide Myanmar US$5 million worth of equipment to conduct a census, said Dr Khing Soe, deputy director of the Immigration and Manpower Department.

Myanmar will begin nationwide census from March 30 to April 10, 2014, with the process costing $55 million as estimated by UNFPA.

"The population of the country is 60 million and the UNFPA approximated the expenditure for each person in this process is $1. The assistance of UNFPA will come with equipment," said Dr Khaing Soe.

Khin Ye, Minister for Immigration and Population, earlier said the government will take preliminary census in 20 townships from March 30 to April 10, 2013.

"An accurate census is very important for the country. Crucial projects must be based on the exact population data," the minister said.

Myanmar's last census was in 1983.
